Grants for stronger homes in Queensland's north
Flood-affected homeowners in North and Far North Queensland can now access grants to rebuild their homes for long-term flood resilience.
Grants of up to $10,000 are available through the Stronger Homes Grant program, jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland governments.
The assistance will help residents struggling with increasing construction costs to rebuild properly.
Eligible homeowners can use the grants for works such as raising essential services like electrical switchboards, hot water systems and air-conditioning, data and electrical points, and help protect parts of their homes from flood damage.
These practical upgrades will also allow people to commence the process of recovery sooner and get back into their homes.
With flood-ravaged North and Far North Queensland recovering from February’s historical flood event, the Stronger Homes Grant program is an opportunity for flood victims to build long-term resilience into their homes.
Flood damage can be devastating for families and the program is tailored to helping protect families and communities from the terrible impacts of repeated flooding.
The Stronger Homes Grant program is an example of Betterment, investing in resilience helps locals rebuild stronger and reduce the impact of future events.
Additionally, insurers have indicated that programs to reduce flood risk have the potential to put downward pressure on premiums.
The Stronger Homes Grant program is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments through the Commonwealth-state Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
Other support measures activated in response to the flood emergency include personal hardship payments; loans and grants for primary producers, small businesses, and not-for-profit groups; freight subsidies and Emergency Fodder Support for eligible primary producers; and assistance for counter disaster operations and the reconstruction of essential public assets for 30 local government areas.
