Revitalised Colleges Crossing Recreation Reserve reopens
Ipswich’s much-loved Colleges Crossing Recreation Reserve has reopened after being severely damaged by the devastating floods of 2022.
Almost $10 million in funding was provided under the Australian and Queensland Governments’ joint Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) to Ipswich City Council to repair and upgrade the riverside park, with further significant investment made by council to bring the project to life.
The Chuwar reserve now boasts a modern, creative playground, new picnic and barbecue areas, additional amenities, numerous sheltered seating options, and extensive green space, including native gardens and grassed areas.
As part of restoration works more than 100 mature trees and almost 35,000 plants have been planted, 22,000 square metres of turf laid, and more than 2,500 square metres of concrete poured.
Community input was instrumental in developing the reserve’s cultural elements, which include totem poles, landscape features, educational and interpretive signage, and sandblasted artwork on both footpaths and sandstone bricks.
Another new feature at the revitalised reserve will be food and beverage trucks, with council excited to support local business while giving the public a range of delicious options to choose from.
Changes to the topography of the reserve and strengthened drainage infrastructure will also mean the space can reopen sooner following a flood event.
Resilience and recovery go hand in hand, and with improved planning for the future comes better outcomes for the community.
Colleges Crossing has a long history of being one of the most visited outdoor spots in Ipswich, and that legacy will only grown with these welcomed upgrades to the recreation reserve.
Projects like this are vital to community recovery following major disaster events, promoting connection, wellbeing, and a renewed positive outlook.
Colleges Crossing Recreation Reserve is now open to locals and visitors alike, and stands as a milestone in the resurgence of Ipswich following the 2022 floods.
If you're in the area there is no better place to enjoy the outdoors, with friends, family and pets alike.
